Helen Wharmby joined Billingshurst Choral Society as accompanist in November 2015.

Helen studied Music at the University of Birmingham, graduating with First Class Honours and gaining the University’s Barber Scholarship award. She continued her studies privately under the inspiring guidance of Hilary Coates (Trinity Laban) and Chris Elton (Royal Academy of Music), gaining both the DipABRSM and LRSM diplomas in piano performance with distinction.

Helen has performed on BBC radio and television and has given a number of recitals, both as an accompanist and soloist, in London and the South East.  She works with various local choral societies and choirs, including Holmbury Choral Society, Horsley Choral Society, Dorking Camerata and the Surrey Hills Chamber Choir (past winners of Choir of the Year), and has also worked with Guildford Opera and Occam Singers. She teaches piano at St Teresa’s School in Effingham and also privately to children and adults. Helen runs a number of children’s choirs and orchestras in primary and secondary schools, writing and arranging the music to suit the abilities of the children involved.

Helen recently researched and published a book about the history of her children’s primary school in Dorking (St Paul’s School), a project which sparked a new interest in local history and led her to study for an Advanced Diploma in History at University of Oxford, gaining a distinction. A Chartered Accountant for many years, Helen is married with four children.
